Jerusalem District Demands $27,000 To Feed Stree Cats

Jerusalem District has set up a program to feed thousands of street cats in the city; although expert warn the initiative could increase the population of the street cats.

The District has assigned feeding station in areas where trash cans are buried underground, and citizens are encouraged to add food and water in addition to the provision left by the District.

The District has budgeted NIS 100,000 (approximately $27,000) to carry out the exercise.

Jerusalem Mayor, Moshe Lion, in a statement said, "When I understood the magnitude of the problem and the great distress caused, I decided to take up the task immediately."

However, urban nature experts and zoology told the Haaretz Daily that the program could bring about an increase in the population of street cats.

Amir Balaban, director for urban nature at the society for the protection of Nature in Israel in a statement, said, "When you provide a constant and continuous food source, you prevent the system from regulating the size of the population." He also said that "Feeding is not the solution.
