President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Justice Ibrahim Tanko Mohammed as the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria after suspending the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen.
The President explained that the decision was based on the request of the Code Of Conduct Tribunal, pending the completion of Justice Onnoghen's trial.
Justice Onnoghen is being tried over failure to declare all his assets. Hence the Federal Government had applied, asking him to step aside so he can have enough time to defend himself before the Tribunal.
However, the Chief Counsel to Onnoghen, Wole Olanipekun, informed the three man panel, which include: Federal High Court, Federal Capital Territory High Court and National industrial Court to restrain the Tribunal from proceeding with the trial of Justice Onnoghen.
Olanipekun, then urge the Tribunal to effect the restraining orders of the appeal before the Appeal Court and adjourned the trial indefinitely.
