The Third Pillar Of Science: What You Need To Know

Computing has grown rapidly to become the third "pillar" of science. But to achieve all its benefits, researchers need software code that is flexible and can be easily adapted to meet new needs, said Benjamin Skuse.

For more than half a century, computational science has increased scientists toolkit to study beyond the normal scope of reasoning. Powerful computers with special codes enable researchers to change initial physical conditions in the model.

According to David Ham, a computational scientist at Imperial College in the UK, "computation fills in a gap between theory and experiment. A computation tells you what the consequences of your theory are, which facilitates experimentation and observation work, because you can tell what you are suppose to look for to judge whether your theory is valid."
