Taking Food Supplements Might Be Harmful, Says Doctor
Darasimi Bello, a medical doctor based in Ilorin has warned people to be careful when taking food supplements because its outcome could be very devastating.
Bello told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Ilorin that though the products could be harmless, certain medical conditions do not allow their intake.
He however advised that people should always consult a doctor before taking any supplement, especially when suffering from a given medical condition.
"Truly, these supplements comprises of herbs, but they may not be safe, particularly if you have certain medical conditions or take some medications.
The best thing is to talk with a medical doctor before taking any supplement, because you may not know the right thing to do", said Bello.
According to Bello in a statement, "the common ginger that people take to ease nausea brought on by surgery, chemotherapy, motion sickness or arthritis should not be taken by a person that have gallstones or take blood thinners. This is because ginger can cause problems with blood clotting, heart rhythms, blood pressure and blood sugar levels."
"Even the popular Aloe Vera which help burns or wounds to heal fast, when taken by some people by mouth, could cause abnormal heart rhythm. It may also lower your blood sugar levels if you have diabetes," he added.
Bello then encourage people to always consult a doctor before using food supplements.
