China Chemicals plant explosion has destroyed parts of the industrial park and injured more than 700 people.
The enormous blast has killed 47 people, injured 90 and put another 640 in the hospital.
The blast was similar to an earthquake, splitting windows and collapsing roofs up to 3km away. The explosion destroyed the plant including 16 neighbouring factories, leaving an enormous crater.
The blast took place on Thursday afternoon at Jiangsu Tianjiayi Chemical Company in an Industrial park at the outskirts of Yangcheng. More than 900 fire extinguishers were at the scene trying to put off the fire that has submerged chemicals storage tanks and had spread to five neighbouring factories.
However, the cause of the explosion is not yet known. But according to site workers report to Business News outlets Caixin, a lorry carring natural gas had caught fire leading to the explosion of a benzene storage tank.
The Jiangsu Tianjiayi chemical company is known for the production of m- and p- phenylenediamine. The two compounds are precursors for polymers, resins and dyes.
China's president Xi Jinping, who was in Italy as at when the incident took place, said that no efforts should be made to rescue people and Care for the injured. He also ordered for thorough investigation to avoid such incident in the future. Besides, an undisclosed number of Tianjiayi Chemical Company officials were arrested after the incident.
