The Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) has registered 83 deaths, 381 chronic cases and 1,279 suspected cases of Lassa Fever in 2019.

Dr Kola Jinadu, Senior Technical Adviser to the Chief Executive Officer, disclosed this to News Agencies of Nigeria in Jos on Tuesday.

He made this statement while he was speaking at a health journalism masterclass organised by Nigeria Health Watch, a non-governmental organisation.

Dr Kola in a statement said that the Center has 12 credible cases, adding that the cases affected 21 states of the federation.

"We have recorded 21 States with severe Lassa Fever cases with fatality rate of 21.8%.

"In a bid to treat the infected persons and control the spread of the disease, 15 health care workers were infected with the disease during the reevaluation period", he said.

However, he said that there was a reduction in the number of reported cases in recent weeks.

Dr Kola also said that a national multi-parner, multi-sectoral Emergency Operations Center led by NCDC will continue to regulate the rate of spread of the disease, and that the state EOCs have been very functional in Ondo, Plateau and Eboyi states.

Besides, the National Rapid Response Team which comprises of the NCDC, Federal Ministries of Agriculture and Environment are already working in some of the affected States such as Edo, Oyo, Bauchi, Taraba, Plateau and Eboyi.
