Life on other planets is possible: As Earth Organisms Survive 533 Days In Space

Is it feasible for life to be able to exist on other planets? This is an issue that has occupied researchers for many years. Recent scientific analysis has revealed more and more secrets of the solar-system, but are still yet to get concrete proof of life in space. But recently, a new research study has proven it is certainly possible.

Earth-based microorganisms have survive 533 days in space stuck to the exterior of the International Space Station (ISS). The German Aerospace Center (DLR) directed the experiment known as BIOMEX. The long-term research project discovered that organisms such as bacteria, algae, lichens and fungi exposed to Mars type conditions could survive while attached to the ISS. The outcomes even impressed the scientists themselves.

Astrobiologist, Jean-Pierre Paul de Vera from the DLR Institute of Planetary Research in Berlin-Adlershof in a statement said, "some of the organisms demonstrated absolute resistance to radiation in outer space and actually returned to Planet Earth as 'survivors' from space."

"Among other things, we also carry analysis on archaea, which are unicellular microorganisms that have existed in the world for over three-and-a-half billion years, living inside salty seawater. Our 'test subjects' are relatively associated with theirs that have already been isolated in the Arctic permafrost. They may have survived in space conditions and are usually also detectable with our own instruments. Such single-celled creatures could possibly be candidates for life  forms that could be found on Mars."

Life on Mars is Possible. The primary goal
of the research was to observe if living things from Earth can survive in the intense environments found in space. The results prove that life in space is possible.

Didier Drogba- Chelsea Legend Sued By A Canadian Shoemaker For £1.25 Million

Drogba retired from active football last  November after representing Phoenix Arizona rising for just one year.

Chelsea legend Didier Drogba has been sued for £1 million by a Canadian shoemaker for deliberately staying away from London's Selfridges event in 2017. The 41-year-old has been said to have mint a casual agreement to promote Jordan Pascal's luxury JAD brand during his rule at Montreal's Impact about three seasons ago.

SunSport nevertheless report that Pascal now sued the previous Ivorian striker for £1.25 million in lost funds, expenditures and damages.

Pascal claims in lawsuit: "Even though the particular contract has not been formally authorized, Drogba explicitly accepted the terms. "His attitude caught
me within a maze regarding broken promises and negligence. It exhausted my funds, destroyed my reputation within the fashion industry, made investors go away and led me to the brink of ruin and  bankruptcy."

Meanwhile, the former Chelsea star, who won Champions League title with the club in 2012 will hope the case is booted out whenever heard at Montreal's high court.

Drogba's legal representatives reacted: "The allegations are bogus and defamatory. We will certainly take the appropriate measures. "He has always respected his obligations, as though the two parties were linked by the agreement regarding him to be the brand's ambassador."

Ladies Who Wear Leggings Lead Boys Into Sin Disappointed Mum Suggests

A woman who described herself as “mother of four sons” have appealed to younger females to stop wearing leggings which, she argues, are usually capable of influencing men passion and lead them into sin.

Maryann white who describes herself as a “Catholic made her thoughts and opinions known through a letter published in the University of Notre Dame student newspaper, The Observer.

“I’m simply a Catholic mother of four sons with a new problem that only girls could solve: leggings," she wrote.

When carpeted, White insists that she is usually “not trying to slander anyone or infringe on anyone’s rights."

Nevertheless she recalls an occurrence where she came across “a group of youthful women, all wearing extremely snug-fitting leggings and all putting on short-waisted tops” during a Mass service.

“Some of them genuinely looked as though the tights had been coated on them… Leggings are usually so naked, so fitting, so exposing.

“Could you think of typically the mother of sons the next time you decide to go shopping and consider choosing denim jeans instead? ” she laments in the letter.

In the mean time, Yahoo UK Style reports that the letter has been greatly criticised simply by students at the University of Notre Dame, with several respondents taking to Twitter to proclaim their right to put on whatever they really like.

What’s more, a University of Notre Dame-based student group, Reproductive: Health, has launched “Leggings Pride Day” as a new reaction towards the letter, contacting students to put on their leggings in demonstration.

They have even began the hashtag #LeggingsDayND.

Demolition Of Abuja Orphanage: FCTA Promises To Accommodate Stranded Children

The Federal Capital Territory Administration has said it will offer temporary accommodation for over 150 children, who were left homeless following an earlier demolition exercise in Kubwa, a new satellite town in Abuja on Tuesday.

The Director FCTA Department of Development and Control, Muktar Galadima, explained this during a combined press briefing with the particular owner of the affected property on Thursday in Abuja.

He said that the administration was a lot more concerned about the wellbeing of the children, hence the need to provide the accommodation.

“In the beginning, we had sympathy and a kind heart for the children and we are looking for a way forward for the children, on how to be able to cushion their hardships by simply relocating them so that they do not feel that they are rejected by the society.

“That is why the most essential thing at this moment is the welfare of those children, which we are working on seriously.

“We want to provide succour for them, by getting them temporary accommodation, even if it is for one year so that our children will have a safe place to stay.

“This happens because this government offers a human face. We all hope to do that as soon as possible’’, he assured.

The director said demolition of Divine Wounds associated with Jesus Christ Orphanage and Rehabilitation Home, Kubwa, was because the property failed to comply with development control requirements in the nation’s capital.

He alleged that the owner disregarded “Several Stop’’ work and other notices served on the property including a demand for the title  document of  the particular  plot.

“When we received this complaint of encroachment, we visited the site and served all the relevant notices beginning from “Stop Work’’ notice, quit notice, to demolition notice.

“This is in line with our responsibility of ensuring strict implementation of the Abuja Master Plan.

The owner did not submit any kind of title document regarding the disputed property. If she had submitted, we would have put her title document together with that associated with the complainant.

“We will certainly then send it to the department of lands administration to confirm who the rightful owner of the land was or perhaps there are three building plots she is sitting upon.

“The issuing authority would now write us officially confirming the real owner of the land," he said.

Galadima requested the owner to submit documents to his office with regard to onward submission to Lands Department as well as the Abuja Geographic Information Systems to determine the authentic owner of the particular plot.

However, owner of the orphanage, Bishop Victoria Ezemoka at the joint press briefing produced another title document for the same property.

She denied claim by the department that she failed to produce the documents after several notices and demands.

According to her, trouble over ownership of the disputed property started immediately after the death of her husband.

The lady also claimed that her brother-in-law wanted to take over the property.

Humans Can Produce New Brain Cells Into Their 90s: New Scientists Discovery

Scientists have now discovered that humans can produce fresh brain cells into their 90s, but the production of new neurons is only possible for those with Alzheimer's disease.

This discovery may help doctors to diagnose Alzheimer's at an earlier stage, and encourage those at risk to engage in exercise and other related activities that could help increase the production of new brain cells.

This is the recent work that has cause chaos amount new scientists, with some arguing that human develop complete brain cells when they reach adulthood, and others suggesting that production of fresh neurons continue to develop into old age.

In a bid to help decide the the correct theory, scientists in Spain conducted a battery of tests on brain tissue donated by 13 individuals who died aged 43-87. All have a compatible brain before their deaths.

A neuroscientist at the Autonomous University of Madrid, Maria Llorens-Martins and the senior scientist on the study, discovered that while the brain cells produce new neurons, there was a drastic reduction in number with those between the ages of 40 and 70, also,  the number of new neurons found in the part of the brain studied decreased from about 40,000 to 30,000 per cubic millimeters.

The new cells were produced in the part of the brain known as the dentate gyrus. It is a part of the hyppocampus which plays a special role in learning, emotion, mood, and memory. The gradual decrease in new brain cells is said to go alongside with the cognitive decline that comes with old age.

However, after studying healthy brain cells, scientists went further to study the brains of people who had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's before death. They then carried out analysis on brain cells from 45 patients aged 52 to 97. All had new brain cells in the dentate gyrus.

Maria in a statement said, "This is very essential for the Alzheimer's disease discipline because the number of cells you detect in healthy individuals is always greater than the number detected in patients with Alzheimer's disease regardless of their age. It suggests that same independent mechanism, different from physiological ageing, might be responsible for the decreasing number of new neurons."

Besides, she said the research was only possible because of the benevolent act of the individuals who donated their brains to science.

Again, she said brain scans might one day be able to detect newly formed brain cells and so Alzheimer's could be diagnosed in its earliest stage.

Paternity Test Result Shows Woman Gave Birth To Twins Belonging To Two Different Fathers

A woman have been confirmed to deliver twin boys belonging to different fathers in China.

The twins' mother had admitted that she had a night stand with another man, after the paternity test. The result showed one of the boys have no biological relationship with the man.

According to report, the man was surprised because one of the boys never looked like him and so he kept questioning his wife after the paternity test results, before she later spill out the truth. The man had said that he would only cater for his child, but not the child the paternity test already prove is not his own.

The couple had actually intended to document the birth of their twin boys at  a local police station when they were requested to submit a test to prove that they are the parents, according to Strait Herald newspaper.

Consequently, it is assumed that the birth of twins from two different father is rare, it usually occur sometimes. It is an unusual occurrence known as heteropaternal superfecundation. This happens as a result of a woman having sexual intercourse with two different men within a day before or after ovulation.

Endocrine Societies Set Up New Guidelines To Address Diabetes Issues In Older Adult

The new guidelines from the Endocrine Society addresses multiple complex problems involved in managing diabetes in older adults.

The document, Treatment of Diabetes In Older Adults: An Endocrine Society Clinical Practice Guidelines, was officially launched at the 2019 Endocrine Society Annual Meeting and was published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism alongside with other online resources.

During a press briefing, the committee chairman Derek LeRoith, MD, PhD, of the Kahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai New York City, said, "For the past decades, we have not given attention to the older adults with diabetic issues because their lifespan was considered short. But we now discovered that 65-70 years old could live up to 85 to 90 years; and so preventing the long term complications is very essential."

The guidelines specifically addresses diabetes issues in adults aged 65 and above. It entails the screening, management and prevention of glycemia, blood pressure and lipids, as well as comorbidities, complications, and specific conditions such as diabetes care in the hospital and long term care facilities, and management of type 1 diabetes in older adults.

We believe there should be frequent screening. For instance, if you screen for pre-diabetes and diabetes in older adults, it can allow you to intervene", LeRoith said.

Prevention of hypoglycemia is a major issue,  coauthor Mark E.  Molitch, MD, of the Northwestern University Feinbery School of Medicine, Chicago, Illinoise told journalists during the briefing.

According to LeRoith in a statement, "A 70 year old who had hypoglycemia and falls on the floor can fracture a hip,  so we have to be extremely careful about preventing hypoglycemia. Similarly, for blood pressure, we don't want to be too aggressive because that can lead to falls. All of these can help adjust medications for older adults with any of these health challenges.

However, other specific aging related comorbidities and challenges addressed in the guidelines include saropenia, cognitive dysfunction, frailty, diminished medication adherence, and loss of independence in daily activities.

Nanorobots Can Boost Mars Colony Bid

A group of scientists has developed new techniques to  create legions of bug-shaped, laser controlled robots each of which is roughly the width of  a human hair, with revolutionary applications for surgery techniques and space exploration.

The assistant professor of electrical and systems engineering at the University of Pennsylvania, Marc Miskin, developed the nanofabrication techniques with his colleagues, professor Cohen and Paul MiEuen and researcher Alejandro Cortex during postdoctoral research at Cornell University. For the past decades, they innovated a method of transforming a four-inch specialised silicon wafer into a million tiny robots in just few weeks. Professor Miskin told Express.co.uk: "The age of nanotechnology is now to some extent here - this is the main deal.

"The silicon conductor industry has been miniaturising everything and we have to take a great step ahead."

According to Mr. Miskin, each individual robot has four legs which are 100 atoms thick, and are formed from a bilayer of platinum and titanium, or alternately, graphene.

The researchers shine a laser on one of a robot's solar cells to power it. This makes the platinum in the leg to enlarge, while the titanium remains inflexible, making the limb to bend.

The robots gait is produced because each solar cell causes the alternate contraction or relaxation of the front or back legs.

Professor Miskin added: "Each one is roughly three to five times the size of a human hair.

"You can fit one million of them on a four-inch silicon wafer. It's quite fantastic.

"The legs are very strong. Each robot carries a body that's 1000 times chunky and weighs roughly 8000 times more than each leg."

In a statement, Professor Miskin said, the robots can be injected using a syringe, therefore, their application in surgical techniques is possible. For instance, they could be used to deliver drugs or map the human brain.

He also said that billionaire space flight entrepreneur, Elon Musk - currently planning to establish a colony on Mars - might be interested in them, saying: "it's being stated that the major problem with robots is their size, and that their size should be reduced, which could work for space research."

They can also be used as source of renewable energy, Professor Miskin said.

Robots could be used as "caretakers" for lithium batteries to prevent them from going flat, he explained, greatly prolonging their lives.

Again, he said, "Fifty years ago computers were the size of a table top - presently, we can get 100 million of these robots on one."

Human Genome Editing: Engagement Of World Health Organisation New Advisory Council

The World Health Organisation's new  advisory council are developing global standards for governance and administration of human genome editing and are working hard towards achieving a strong international governance
framework in this field.

Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-general in a statement, said, "Gene editing holds unbelievable promise for health, but it also poses some risks, both ethically and medically.

"This council is an absolute example of WHO's leadership by making sure some of the world's leading experts provide guidance on this complicated issue. I must appreciate each member of the Expert Advisory Council for their time and expertise."

However, for the past two days, the council of experts reconsidered the present state of science and technology. They also agreed on major principles of transparency, inclusivity and responsibility that support the council current recommendations. The council had noted that it is irresponsible at this time for anyone to proceed with clinical applications of human germline genome editing.

The council also agreed that a control registry on human genome editing research is required in order to create an open and transparent database of the work in progress.

The council has asked WHO to immediately commence working to establish such a registry.

According to Dr Soumya Swamanathan, WHO Chief Scientist, "They will develop important tools and guidance for all those working on this new technology to ensure maximum benefit and minimal risk to human health."

Dr Kola Jinadu, Senior Technical Adviser to the Chief Executive Officer, disclosed this to News Agencies of Nigeria in Jos on Tuesday.

He made this statement while he was speaking at a health journalism masterclass organised by Nigeria Health Watch, a non-governmental organisation.

Dr Kola in a statement said that the Center has 12 credible cases, adding that the cases affected 21 states of the federation.

"We have recorded 21 States with severe Lassa Fever cases with fatality rate of 21.8%.

"In a bid to treat the infected persons and control the spread of the disease, 15 health care workers were infected with the disease during the reevaluation period", he said.

However, he said that there was a reduction in the number of reported cases in recent weeks.

Dr Kola also said that a national multi-parner, multi-sectoral Emergency Operations Center led by NCDC will continue to regulate the rate of spread of the disease, and that the state EOCs have been very functional in Ondo, Plateau and Eboyi states.

Besides, the National Rapid Response Team which comprises of the NCDC, Federal Ministries of Agriculture and Environment are already working in some of the affected States such as Edo, Oyo, Bauchi, Taraba, Plateau and Eboyi.

6000 Newborns Risk Contracting HIV In Kaduna State In 2019 -Says UNICEF

The United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) says that 6,000 children in Kaduna State may contract the deadly disease, HIV in 2019 if elimination of Mother-To-Child Transmission (eMTCT) of HIV interventions are not enforced.

The Chief of Field Office, UNICEF Kaduna, Zakari Adam, made this statement at a one-day meeting in Kaduna on Monday. The said meeting was organised for the wives of local government chairmen in the state to give feedback on the level of enforcement of 2018 demand creation activities on eMTCT of HIV.

Mr Adam said that Kaduna State is among the four states in the country being assisted by UNICEF to lead eMTCT by 2020 and put an end to adolescent AIDS pandemic by 2030.

According to Mr Adam, the state had recorded an increase in eMTCT coverage from 16% in 2012 to 66% in 2017, but it still undergo some major challenges such as low antenatal care response and hospital delivery.

He also said that the state was equally struggling on how to create awareness about the benefits of eMTCT and the provision of quality human resources for better health services.

In a statement, Mr Adam said, "Presently, there are 6,000 babies at the risk of contracting HIV infection in 2019 if suitable and innovative eMTCT interventions are not fully enforced.

"This meeting therefore, is an  avenue to expose all the eMTCT challenges with a view to engaging in proactive measures to tackle them."

World War 3: 'Killer Robots And Biological Weapons Will Transform Warfare Forever' Says Navy Chief

Killer robots and biological weapons and nerve agents such as Novichok which was used in the assassination attempt of  Russian double-agent Sergei Skripal will be employ to change the face of warfare forever, a senior Royal Navy Commander has warned.

According to him, threats to the security of the United Kingdom were "more delicate now than they have been for decades."

Captain Jerry Kyd handed over the command of aircraft carrier, HMS Queen Elizabeth, the navy's biggest vessel, after bringing it to New York, and painting a horrific image of the future.

He said: "We are on the verge of a new era in military affairs", adding that warfare in the decades is going to be quite exciting."

Again, Captain Kyd, said, "I think the associate of militarisation, quantum computing of automatic fighting components, whether it is in the air, the surface or subsurface, the ability of computers and machines to make fast decision making loops - I think will basically transform the manner of warfare.

"I think it is an interesting but deeply terrifying future, where I think the ethics and morals of war will be tested, and where we will see, I am sure, robots engaged in killing other human beings."

In a statement when on the air craft preparing to sail into New York, he forecasted there will be an increase in other forms of warfare - not just chemical and biological, but also generic.

Besides, Captain Kyd said the nerve agent, Novichok attack in Salisbury against former Russian spy, Mr. Skripal is a classic reminder that the veneer of security is very thin."

He added, "I think the threat to the United Kingdom are more acute now than they have been for many decades."

Captain Kyd's words can be compare to those of Defence Secretary Williamson when he presented a speech at the Royal United Services Institution (RUSI) earlier this year at which he emphasized the importance of Royal Navy in keeping Britain safe in an uncertain world.

Mr Williamson said, "Look at Russia's resurgence under President Putin, its submarine activity has increased ten-fold in the North Atlantic.

"But that's not all. In 2010, the Royal Navy had to respond once to a Russian Navy Ship approaching UK territorial waters.

"Last year we had to respond 33 times.

Threats against us are increasing, coming out from Russia, China and from non-state actors using drones to drop bombs, ballistic missiles to attack airports and anti-ship missiles to threaten our narrow shipping laws as well as the new and evolving threats from cyber attacks."

World Health Organisation Fears Tuberculosis (TB) Will Take Control Of Europe

WHO has described TB as a major health issue in Europe which will worsen if appropriate measures are not put in place to control it.

Tuberculosis is the major cause of death from a single infection agent, thus, this characteristics makes it more deadly than HIV and AIDS.

Presently, there are 275000 new cases of TB,  and around 77000 people are affected by the "super" strain of the virus.

The highest number of cases of drug resistance TB were also discovered in Europe, leading to fears it could spread all over the continent.

Tuberculosis is a communicable disease, once infected, the disease can go on to infect 10 - 15 more persons.

Dr Zsuzsanna Jakab, WHO Regional Director for Europe said: "If we don't act immediately and decisively, the drug resistance forms of the disease will spread all over Europe.

Again, Dr Vytenis Adrivkaitis, the European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety in a statement said, "Even though tuberculosis is an ancient, preventable and curable disease, it still cause great harm and death to many people in the European Union and the world at large."

WHO is planning to get rid of TB by 2030. But it believes that we must be involved to make that a reality.

According Dr Jakab, "TB is preventable and curable, the time to take drastic action is now, to end TB by 2030."

Is A Robot About To Take Your Job? "Do Not Panic" says Nikolas Kairinos

A new study has revealed that artificial intelligence (AI) will replace 40% of jobs in the next 15 years. Presently, companies such as Microsoft and Facebook are recruiting robots to positions within their companies.

A leading AI expert has said that the trend is set to continue throughout the 21st century as companies become increasingly dependent on technology. RS components analyzed job posts from some of the world's biggest tech companies to find out which had the highest percentage of AI-related employment, with Microsoft leading the way with 1,964 AI employment - equivalent to 36% of the total jobs they can offer. The US-based Nvidia, which designs graphics processing units for video games, followed in second place with 837 of AI job openings, equating to 33%.

An RS components spokesman said, "the Google Exec stated that AI will allow new industries to be built from the scratch up with automation in mind. AI will be cheaper than human employees. However, it will also create new roles, as well as replace recent ones."

Nikolas Kairinos, CEO and founder of Fountech.ai, who is an expert in the development and integration of AI solutions to enhance organisations' products and services, in a statement, said, "it should come as a surprise that big tech companies are increasing their number of AI-related jobs. We can see that the companies listed in the research are already using different types of AI-technology to enhance the way they interact with their users and customers. "

Again,  he said, "this should not be a call for panic. As with a new technological invention, people often fear the worst-case scenario when this often proves not to be the case. AI is making our jobs better, removing the need for us to complete difficult and time consuming jobs, to instead concentrating on more important ones."

Superhuman' Robots Will Outstrip Mankind Within 50 Years, Warns Artificial Intelligence Expect

Superhuman' robots will be in a position to outstrip the abilities of mankind within the next 50 years, an expert in artificial intelligence has warned, highlighting that it was important to prevent mankind being "replaced."

In a statement, Luca De Ambroggi, the research and analysis lead for AI solutions within the Transformative Technology team at London-based global information provider IHS Markit, told Express.co.uk: "In 50 years, it is reasonable to think that robots will be able to "support" and replace human beings in several activities. Already mechanical devices outperform humans in sensitiveness and reaction time." Considering the rapid growth of technology, in the last decade, Mr. Ambroggi said 50years was "sufficient" to close several gaps with human beings.

In addition, he said "even if our brain will still have advantages and human beings will still remain more dynamic and versatile, electronics will be able to outperform humans in several specific functions, as it does today, from machine vision to audio and speech recognition. Humans have to prevent machines being in a position to replace them. The longer term question is, can the replaced people be re-qualified and allowed to still add value in our society?" It was important, he advised, that humans set befitting rules and defined boundaries.

However, this era is Generic-Multi Modal AI, Ambroggi noted. It is likened to human intelligence applied in all senses, with excellent performance ability in all areas. For instance, from the sensing aspects, electronics and semi conductor support, to the ability to hear, see, taste as well as smell and touch with the latest MEMS technologies.

Considering the future, Mr. Ambroggi thought of the idea of robots one day being regarded as having consciousness, and therefore being considered independent lifeforms.

He explained "this is very possible to be a reality as well, perhaps not in the next 50 years but technology has developed so rapidly that I wouldn't want to doubt it. Before that, we should put in place appropriate regulations, methodologies and ethical proceedings to be able to take advantage of the positive side of technologies."

NASA To Study Untouched Samples Collected From The Moon

The US Space Travel Agency, NASA has selected nine teams to study untouched samples collected from the moon in the 1970s by the Apollo mission which have been stored for almost 50 years.

The sum of $8 million dollars has been given to the teams, NASA said in a statement.

Thomas Zurbuchen, Associate Administrator for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington, DC, in a statement, said, "by studying these rare  lunar samples for the first time, a generation of scientists will help enhance our knowledge of our lunar neighbour and prepare for the next era of exploration of the moon and beyond."

Six of the nine teams have been assigned to examine one of the three remaining lunar samples from Apollo missions 15, 16, and  17, which have not been exposed to Earth's atmosphere.

The samples which will be examined were brought to Earth vacuum-sealed from the moon by Harrison Schmitt and Gene Cernan in 1972.

The samples comprises of about 800 grams of materials, still enclosed in a "drive tube" that was pounded into the lunar regolith to collect a core of materials.

The core has been carefully stored at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, since December 1972.

According to Lori Glaze, acting director of NASA's Planetary Science Division in Washington, DC, "returned samples are an investment in the future. These samples were deliberately stored so we can take advantage of today's more advanced and complex technology to answer unknown questions."

Heart Failure: New Drug Now Produced To Improve Heart Function

Heart failure is the inability of the heart to pump blood efficiently. Current treatment help slow down or stop the disease from getting worse; but they can't revert it.

Presently,  scientists have produced a drug that can restrain heart failure and also enhance the heart's blood pumping ability.

The new drug has been named "SAMBA" (meaning, Selective Antagonist of Mitofusin 1- B2PK Association) by the researchers in Brazil and the United States who invented and tested the drug.

The Journal Nature Communications has recently published a paper that explains how the researchers developed SAMBA and tested it on rodents models of heart failure.

"The drug in current use halt the progression of the disease but never reverted it, says first study author, Julio C.B. Ferreira, who is a professor in the Biomedical Science Institute at the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil.

When the drug was given to rats with heart failure, the drug not only stop the disease from progressing but also reduced its complication by enhancing the ability of the heart muscle to contrast.

SAMBA works by stopping a specific reaction between the proteins mitofusin 1 (MFn1) and beta 11 protein kinase C (B2PKC) whose association impairs mitochondria in the heart muscle cells, causing the cells to die.

However, in a statement, professor Ferreira said, "we showed that by regulating this specific reaction, we could both halt the progression and make the disease regress to a less severe stage."

Avocados Seeds- What Scientists Discovered

Avocados are rich in vitamins and minerals and they are a great source of fats. Most people are only interested in eating the fruit pulp and discard the seeds. But are the Avocado seeds really useful?

In 2016, after discovering this Avocado-derived compound as dye, Gregory Ziegler and Joshua Lambert established the company 'Persia Naturals' that presently distribute it as a natural food colour additive.

Recently, Ziegler, Lambert and colleagues are trying to know whether they can put this same compound to use as an anti-inflammatory substance. If their theory works out, the compound could help treat cardiovascular diseases and cancer.

In a new study paper, which features in the open-access journal Advances in Food Technology and Nutritional Science, the researchers report that, ancient local South American have used Avocado seeds to treat inflammatory diseases.

"Ethno-pharmacological studies of the Aztec and Maya cultures have reported the use of decoctions of Avocado seeds for the treatment of parasitic and mycotic diseases, diabetes, inflammation and gastrointestinal irregularity", they noted.

Researchers said that Avocado seeds are very useful because they are rich in polyphenols. Polyphenols are natural substances with an antioxidant effect, which can help fight against infections at the cellular level.

Inactive Ingredients In Oral Medications May Cause Adverse Reactions

A recent study led by a team of scientists from Brigham and Women's Hospital and Massachusetts Institute of Technology has discovered that most prescribed oral medications in the US contain at least one ingredient which can cause adverse reactions. These ingredients are known as inactive ingredients, and they are added to medications to improve the taste, shel-life, absorption and other characteristics.

The team has now discovered that more than 90% of all oral medications experimented contained at least one ingredient that can cause allergic or gastrointestinal symptoms in sensitive individuals. Examples of such ingredients include lactose, peanut oil, chemical dyes and gluten.

Traverso collaborated with biochemical data scientist, Daniel Reker, PhD, the Brigham's executive director of Pharmacy John Fanikos, and others to analyze data on the inactive ingredients found in 42,052 oral medications that contained more than 354,597 inactive ingredients. Inactive ingredients are substances added to drugs during production but are not expected to have a biological effect. Although such ingredients have been tested for safety, reports have suggested that inactive ingredients may have adverse effect on individuals that are allergic.

"What is really striking about this data set is its complication, said Reker. "There are hundreds of different capsules or pills that have the same function using a different combination of inactive ingredients. This highlights how convoluted the possible choices of inactive ingredients are, but also suggests that there is a largely untapped opportunity today to specifically choose the most appropriate version of medication for a patient with unusual sensitivities."

Why Obese Women Are Prone To Developing Breast Cancer

Scientists at the University of Illinois have discovered that free fatty acids in the blood cells promote the spread and growth of breast cancer cells. This discovery could help explain the reason why obese women are prone to developing breast cancer after menopause.

Professor Zeynep Madak-Erdogan, a food and nutrition scientist who led the study in a statement said, "when taken up by estrogen-receptor positive breast cancer cells, these fatty acids activate pathways that increases tumor cell growth, survival and proliferation."

However, in order to determine the impact that obesity has on ER-positive cancer cells, the researchers treated different types of primary tumor and metastatic cancer cells with the blood of obese women. They then discovered that the cancer cells became more viable and multiplied.

According to the study, the fatty acids in the women's blood increases the risk of the disease. One line of primary tumor cells became more motile and an enzyme pathway that regulate cell growth, proliferation and survival in a metastatic cell line was activated.

Again, the higher the cells' level of exposure to the fatty acids, the more pronounced the effect on the enzyme pathway known as mammalian target of rapamycin or mTOR pathway.

Besides, in order to examine how estrogen would affect gene expression in the recent study, they treated one group of breast cancer cells with oleic acid - a fatty acid - and another group of cells with a combination of oleic acid and estrogen.

The oleic acid increased the expression of genes involved in cell proliferation and reduced down about 500 genes, including those involved in fatty acid metabolism and adhesion with other cells. The research team found that these effects were greatly reduced in cells that were treated with estrogen and oleic acid combination, and concluded that fatty acids in cells promote breast cancer.

Closest High-Mass Stellar Objects Now Detected By Astronomers

Astronomers have now detected a binary star system with the closest high-mass young stellar objects ever measured, providing a standard "laboratory" to test the theories on high binary star formation.

The distance between the two binary star has been discovered to be PDS 27 and its orbiting stellar companion to be 30 astronomical units away, or 4.5 billion Km by an international team led by the University of Leeds.

This is the approximate distance between the sun and Neptune, making them the stellar companions with the closest proximity ever determined for young high mass stars in a binary system - a star system with two stars revolving around a centre of mass.

Dr Eugenia Koumpia, from School of Physics and Astronomy at Leeds, said, "this is a very interesting discovery, observing and stimulating massive binaries at the initial stages of their development is one of the major difficulty of modern astronomy. But with PDS 27 and its companion, we have found the closest, most massive young stellar objects in binaries resolved to date."

Astromers Discover Pre-biotic Molecule Glycolonitrile In Space

Heterocyclic molecules consist of atoms of two different elements (plus hydrogen) arranged in a ring structure. Nitrogen heterocycles are the major components in biological nucleic acids, and are produced from simpler nitrogen molecules like hydrogen cyanide.

Adenine, one of the component bases of nucleic acids, is considered to have developed from one of the known two-ring nitrogen heterocycles, glycolonitrile.

In the cold interstellar region of space, glycolonitrile could cluster on the surfaces of icy grain through reactions between formaldehyde (CH2O) and hydrogen cyanide.

Astronomers have now discovered that glycolonitrile could be split apart by ultraviolet light, leaving behind different forms of simpler nitrogen-bearing molecules, some of which have been found in molecular cloud in space.

Rafael Martin-Domenech, a CFA astronomer and his colleagues used the ALMA telescope to assist in the search for glycolonitrile in the young, solar-type protostar IRAS162932422B.

The substance has been confirmed to possess a cold outer enclosure of gas and dust and a hotter inner zone heated by the star protruding out of about a hundred astronomical units. The team search for the characteristic spectral signature of glycolonitrile in three frequency bands of ALMA, and discovered thirty-five of its transitions that were not ambiguous.

Again, numerous chemical substances has also been discovered in the warm zone and so the team concluded that some other chemical pathways must be in existence in this zone.

World Must Prepare For The Next Flu Epidemic, Says WHO

The World Health Organisation on Monday said that the world will inevitably encounter another epidemic of flu and needs to prepare for the devastation it could cause, and not underestimate the risks.h

However, enumerating a global plan to control the viral disease and overcome the potential global outbreak, the WHO says that the next influenza epidemic "is a matter of when, not if."

The WHO director-general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus in a statement said, "the threat of pandemic influenza is ever present, therefore we must be vigilant and prepared as the cost of a major influenza outbreak will by far outweigh the price of prevention."

Flu viruses are multiple and changes over time, and they infect around a billion people every year all over the world in seasonal outbreaks. Besides, out of these infections, around 3 to 5 million people have severe cases, leading to between 290,000 and 650,000 seasonal flu-related respiratory deaths.

Consequently, as vaccines can help prevent some cases, WHO has recommended annual vaccination particularly for people working in health care centers and for susceptible people such as the old, the very young and people with underlying illness.

The two main goals of WHO are to enhance worldwide capacities for surveillance and response by encouraging governments to develop a national flu plan and to create better tools such as vaccines and antiviral drugs to prevent, detect, control and treat flu.

Taking Food Supplements Might Be Harmful, Says Doctor

Darasimi Bello, a medical doctor based in Ilorin has warned people to be careful when taking food supplements because its outcome could be very devastating.

Bello told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Ilorin that though the products could be harmless, certain medical conditions do not allow their intake.

He however advised that people should always consult a doctor before taking any supplement, especially when suffering from a given medical condition.

"Truly, these supplements comprises of herbs, but they may not be safe, particularly if you have certain medical conditions or take some medications.
The best thing is to talk with a medical doctor before taking any supplement, because you may not know the right thing to do", said Bello.

According to Bello in a statement, "the common ginger that people take to ease nausea brought on by surgery, chemotherapy, motion sickness or arthritis should not be taken by a person that have gallstones or take blood thinners. This is because ginger can cause problems with blood clotting, heart rhythms, blood pressure and blood sugar levels."

"Even the popular Aloe Vera which help burns or wounds to heal fast, when taken by some people by mouth, could cause abnormal heart rhythm. It may also lower your blood sugar levels if you have diabetes," he added.

Bello then encourage people to always consult a doctor before using food supplements.

'Women Wage Peace' Go On Peaceful Demonstration Asking Parties To Commit To Resolving Palestinian Conflicts

Women Wage Peace Group has called on all political parties to commit to resolving the Israeli-Palestinian dispute.

The group on Friday, set up a Mother's Tent in Rabin Square in Tel Aviv, where the group will have to sit until the day after the  April 9 elections.

The group noted that they engage in a non-violent resolution that is mutually adopted by the Israelis and Palestinians. It has also demanded that women should be included in the peace making process as authorised by the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1328.

One of the speaker at the rally, Ronnie Keider, a mother of 5 children and a grandmother of 17 grandchildren from Moshav Netiva Haasara on the northern Gaza border in a statement, said, "I am standing here to transform the current reality of fear and anxiety to one of hope and prosperity. To attain this goal, Israelis and Palestinians have to consider each other as equals. The time has come to talk", Keider said, adding that "years of enmity and war have to end.Violence has not achieved anything. There has been reaction after reaction, war after war and where has that led us."

Again, she said, "I am turning to the leaders of today and tomorrow and asking them to do something brave."

Another woman, Suzaan Abd Bshara from the Israeli-Arab City of Tira, a mother of 3, told the crowd that she believed in peace between neighbours and nations. "It doesn't matter if one lives on one side of the Green Line or the other. The feelings are the same feelings, the fear of what will happen to our children is the same. We all want a better future for our children", she said. In addition, Abd Bshara said "I am here to stop the next war."

Jeff Bezos Can Afford To Purchase 280,000 Homes In Austin

Jeff Bezos, the richest man in the world can
afford to purchase an entire city. He was raised up in Texas and so he spent much of his childhood years there.

Presently, the Amazon CEO with billions of dollars can buy every home in the State capital, Austin, which would cost about $129.9 billion, according to real estate site, Redfin. That is approximately 280,000 single-family homes.

Redfin, in a statement, said the billionaire can also afford Washington D. C's 200,000 homes wish would cost up to $131.5 billion.

Bezos net worth isn't comprised of cash alone. His is currently worth $134.4 billion and would have to liquidate over 80 million shares of Amazon stock, which accounted for roughly 90 percent of his worth as of October, and he might have to sell off his multi-million dollar properties around the country.

The Pentagon Request For More Aircraft Carriers And Destroyers To Prevent Russian Aggression In Europe

The Pentagon's regional command for Europe has ordered for more aircraft carrier and destroyers in order to prevent Russia belligerence on the continent.

The US Army general, Curtis Scaparotti, the head of US European Command, on Tuesday, told a Senate committee that he needs two more destroyers to supplement the four that the navy already have in Rota,  Spain.

According to John Crady, USNI News reporter, the general said he also wants a "better pace" of carriers and amphibious ships deployed to European waters.

The extra ships would help prevent "an evolving and modernizing Russian fleet", Scaparrotti noted.

The Navy were able to provide the additional vessels. As at early 2019, the US fleet have 287 large warships. In December 2016, Ray Mabus said the fleet needed 355 ships in order to meet the demand from the regional commander.

The Science Behind Knitting

About 3000 years ago, knitting has been an ancient form of manufacturing, but Elisabetta Matsumoto of the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta noted that knowing how stitch type govern shapes will be important for designing new "tunable" materials.

Matsumoto will be presenting her work on the mathematics rules that govern knitting at the American Physical Society March Meeting in Boston this week. She will also engage in a press conference to explain all that knitting entails.

"By picking a stitch, you are not only choosing the geometry but the elastic properties, and that means you can build in the right mechanical properties for anything from aerospace engineering to tissue scaffolding materials", said Matsumoto.

Matsumoto started knitting as a child and later got interested in mathematics and physics, so she developed a new idea for her occupation. "I realized that there is a lot of mathematics and material science that goes into textiles, but that is taken for granted", said Matsumoto.

Currently, members of the Matsumoto group are now delving through the complicated math which encodes mechanical properties within the interlocking series of slip knots of a material. Although the application of pure mathematical process of knot theory to huge catalog of knitting designs is a tricky process for Matsumoto's graduate student, Shashank Markande.

Besides, the Matsumoto group also focuses on simple stitch designs and curves in knitted lattices.

Alien Life Could Exist Arround Stars That Undergo Collision

Scientists new research shows that alien life could be found in solar systems where where two stars collide.

Presently, research is largely focused on planets and potential life around the stars that are similar to our own, since we have refused to accept that any other solar system that has aliens inside of it is likely to look like ours. In fact, none of those "solar twins" - stars that look like our own have actually be found to exist.

When the "solar twins" encounter a third star, a binary pair of stars might collide. That in turn could enlarge the habitable zone, making life more possible.

The habitable zone, which is sometimes called the Goldilocks Zone, is the distance from stars where the temperature is not too cold. These qualities are said to be vital for life, since water will be able to be found and the complex molecules that develop to become life can form.

In this kind of system, when the stars are distant apart, the Goldilocks Zone is set by the radiation coming out of the individual star. If the stars are close enough, the size of it increases, because the stars feel the warmth from each other and the planet is more likely to be in the right place, researchers Bethany Wootton and Richard Parker write.

Again,  Wooten in a statement, said "our model suggests that there are more binary systems where planets sit in Goldilocks Zones than we thought, increasing the prospects for life."

The Third Pillar Of Science: What You Need To Know

Computing has grown rapidly to become the third "pillar" of science. But to achieve all its benefits, researchers need software code that is flexible and can be easily adapted to meet new needs, said Benjamin Skuse.

For more than half a century, computational science has increased scientists toolkit to study beyond the normal scope of reasoning. Powerful computers with special codes enable researchers to change initial physical conditions in the model.

According to David Ham, a computational scientist at Imperial College in the UK, "computation fills in a gap between theory and experiment. A computation tells you what the consequences of your theory are, which facilitates experimentation and observation work, because you can tell what you are suppose to look for to judge whether your theory is valid."

Jeff Bezos Challenged Elon Musk Idea Of Settling On Mars

Jeff Bezos established the Blue Origin, a rocket company in order to reduce the cost of accessing space.

Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon during a recent talk expaciated on his great vision of settling in space, but in doing so, he mocked the idea of his rival, the SpaceX founder, Elon Musk, of settling people in Mars.

In a statement, Bezos said "we have sent robotic probes now to every planet in this solar system, and this (earth) is the best one. My friend who want to move to Mars? I say do me a favour: Go live on the top of Mount Everest for a year first and see if you like it, because it is a garden paradise compared to Mars."

He made the statement at a private lecture directed by Jeff Foust, a senior staff writer at Space News. During the lecture, Bezos spoke about the goals of his rocket company, Blue Origin, and his vision of making space a place where people can live and work.
